Detroit Metropolitan International Airport (DTW) is the main hub for Northwest Airlines with daily connections to many destinations in the US and abroad. The airport is also served by other airlines connecting various national and international destinations. The airport is located within a 25-40 minute taxi drive to and from downtown Ann Arbor (central campus). The simplest and safest way to ride in FROM the airport is to prearrange a pickup with MetroCars at http://www.metrocars.com/, phone numbers 734-946-5700 or 1-800-4561701. A typical one-way ride will cost $55-60 (not including tip and fuel subcharges, if applicable) and two people can share a taxi at the single price. Although prearrangements are encouraged, MetroCars has a taxi stand just outside McNamara Terminal on the ground transportation level.
Other taxi alternatives can be found at http://www.metroairport.com/transportation/.
Prearrangement with MetroCars at http://www.metrocars.com/ is also encouraged when going back to the airport, but a cheaper alternative is Ann Arbor Taxi (phone number 741-9000).
Driving
Ann Arbor is located at the intersection of I-94 and US-23. Street parking is metered at all downtown locations and the city of Ann Arbor enforces its parking laws very aggressively. City-owned lots are designated by white signs with a green P inside a green circle; city-owned garages are designated by white signs with a blue P.The closest public parking garages are located between Thompson and Maynard streets and at the intersection of Thompson and Madison (see red arrows on map PDF). Additional public parking garages and lots are labeled VP. Do not use University-designated lots, even of they are open (!).
Spaces in parking structures cost ca. $0.80 an hour. Lot parking costs ca. $1/hour for the first three hours, and $1.10/hour after that. Hours of operation are posted at each facility. Typical hours are Monday-Saturday, 7 am-3 am. Parking in all structures is free on Sundays.
For those of you who will be staying in downtown hotels, please contact the host and inquire about the parking possibilities.
